Split travel or household expenses without rounding gaps
Published on
Sharing a trip does not mean everyone shares every expense. A dinner may involve three people and an excursion only two. Record who paid first and who owes a share second: these are different roles. End-of-trip settlement avoids turning every purchase into a separate transfer.
What to check before deciding
Agree on participants and excluded expenses before settling. A positive balance means that person should receive, not pay. The algorithm gives a valid settlement without promising a mathematically minimum transfer count. Changing currency does not convert amounts. Shared links contain names and amounts: obtain consent and avoid public disclosure.
Hypothetical example, in EUR
If A pays EUR 30 for three people, each owes EUR 10: A has +20, B and C −10. B and C can pay A EUR 10 each. Dividing EUR 10 needs 3.34 + 3.33 + 3.33; three amounts of 3.33 do not balance. Check custom allocations sum correctly before settlement.
3.34 + 3.33 + 3.33 = 10.00 EUR
What can change the result?
Participants in each expense and custom amounts. Check the currency’s precision before confirming transfers.

Reading the result
Assign each expense only to its participants. Correct payment and allocation rows before removing a person used in them. Balances must sum to zero; positive balances receive and negative balances pay.
